It was a glorious afternoon on Sunday for Nik Čorić and his U16’s Girls team as they hosted a tough Green Gully side, which they managed to defeat three-two thanks to an Abbey Pavlinušić brace and Ivana Čuić opener.
It was a tough match all round with conditions constantly shifting from mild rainfall to sunshine, as the visitors managed to open the scoring and take a one-nil lead.
A handball decision resulted in a penalty shout which was awarded for the hosts. Čuić stepped-up and found nothing but net as the equaliser was enough for the match to head to the break all-square.
The Saints found themselves on the back foot again as they conceded another goal with just over half an hour to play.
Pavlinušić was determined to make a difference as a through-ball saw her onside and one-on-one. Managing to convert and give the hosts their second equaliser of the contest. The sheer determination and fight in the squad were inspiring for those watching from the sidelines.
With just over ten minutes to go and the scores locked at two-all, it was once again Pavlinušić who netted as the ball broke for the prolific striker outside the box. The first-time effort sent the fans into a frenzy as the only remaining job was to hold the three-two lead for the final ten minutes.
This was accomplished with heroic work from the eleven on the pitch however, Kelly Yates who was between the goalposts for the hosts was called into action several times as Gully searched for a way back into the match.
Making a habit of being behind isn’t the best tactic however, with three wins from their opening three matches, it’s a testament to the belief in the squad and the hunger for victories.
Nine points with eleven goals scored and six goals conceded is how the Saints currently sit as they look forward to Round Four where they will be travelling to CB Smith Reserve on Sunday 12th May with kick-off set for 13:30.
