Season 2019 is nearing fruition for our Senior Women’s Team as details have now been confirmed for their Round One clash in the Nike F.C. Cup (formerly known as the Women’s State Knockout Cup).
Kingston Heath Soccer Complex’s second pitch will play host to the tie between the Caulfield United Cobras who ply their trade in the Women’s State League Three South Division and the Saints who are a fresh face in State League Two North-West Competition.
Retaining most of last seasons’ promotion achieving squad, Head Coach Robert Rubinich believes keeping a solid base in the squad is important and the trick is to build around it.
“The team has steadily improved over pre-season. The new additions have come in with a great desire to be part of a successful team and are gelling well with the existing squad,” said Rubinich.
Managing to secure the likes of Natasha Ražov (2018 Club Top-Goal Scorer) alongside Christina Bulić (2018 Players Player) and Alana Movrić (who joined Bulic as joint Best and Fairest), provides Rubinich’s side with a great backbone to be competitive in 2019.
Notably, Ražov also missed out on claiming the 2018 State League Three North-West Best and Fairest medal after scoring 19 goals and missing out in the final tally by a single point.
Rubinich, who is joined by Mijo Sentić on the sidelines in 2019 only signed five players for the new season with three coming from the Melbourne Knights.
Dianna Tovilo, Rachael Grbac and Chloe Čop make the adjustment from Somers St while Hume City’s Madeleine Ortiz and Brighton’s Lorena Barbaro also make the transition to Churchill Reserve.
“The level of the squad has lifted significantly from last season and we are aware that there is plenty of room for growth and improvement. 2019 in a new league with new challenges, we want to be as successful as possible, so we want to be competing in the top half of the table,” said Rubinich.
The State League Two North-West fixture is set to be released within the next fortnight and will allow the squad to prepare for the season that awaits.
Prior to that, focus switches to today’s important battle in the Nike F.C. Cup with kick-off set for 19:00 at the home of the Bentleigh Greens Soccer Club.
